Sunk WWI Royal Navy cruiser examined off Orkney Isles

first_img Sunk WWI Royal Navy cruiser examined off Orkney Isles A secret mission to persuade Tsar Nicholas II of Russia to stay in the First World War failed when Britain’s Secretary of State for War Lord Kitchener and over 700 sailors died in the sinking of the warship HMS Hampshire after it hit a mine off the Orkney Isles.100 years later a Saab Seaeye Falcon underwater robotic system operated by Roving Eye Enterprises examined the wreck in a collaborative project that includes the University of the Highlands and Islands Archaeology Institute, with licensed permission from the Ministry of Defence. The survey confirmed previous findings that the ship capsized and sank following an explosion between the bow and the bridge, and lies upturned on the seabed in approximately 60m of water. The hull is also damaged in places throughout the length of the vessel, exposing parts of the interior.Guns from the ship’s secondary armament were identified at a distance of up to 30m from the main body of the wreck. The location of these breech-loading 6-inch MK VII guns may be related to the sinking event or salvage activity.A breech loading 6-inch MK VII gun protruding from its casemate, part of the Hampshire’s secondary armament, with a possible three-pounder gun to the left. “We are pleased with Manhyia intervention in Esperance saga”- Asante Kotoko

first_imgThe management of Asante Kotoko has stated its pleasure with the decision of the Manhyia Palace to help resolve the current tussle with Esperance of Tunisia. The Palace, which is the seat of the team’s patron, the Asantehene, Otumfour Osei Tutu II, issued a statement on Wednesday to say that it was going all out to look into the saga and get it fully resolved.Kotoko’s current engagement with Esperance is over an outstanding fine of USD 180, 000 that the club needs to pay to the Tunisians after they signed Ghanaian forward Emmanuel Clottey in 2015 while he had a valid contract with Esperance.Speaking to Citi Sports in an interview on Thursday, Kotoko’s Public Relations Officer, Kennedy Boakye Ansah, said that the team’s management had no issues with the decision taken by the Palace since it had the ultimate responsibility of making sure that the club functioned very well.He also gave some clarity to a directive from the Palace in relation to the submission of a report of the 3-year tenure of the team’s Executive Chairman, Dr. Kwame Kyei.“I think it is a very welcome statement from the Palace. The Otumfuor is the life patron of the club and the team belongs to him.The statement is self-explanatory and so, for the management of the team, we think that it is a step in the right step.Concerning the report of the Dr. Kyei’s tenure, he submitted it some time last week and it is only proper that the Otumfuor goes through that report so we see the way forward and so, for us, we believe that it is a good thing.”Boakye Ansah debunked rumours of the sacking of Dr. Kwame Kyei and asked the team’s supporters to stay calm and keep supporting the team even during this period of no football activity. The Ghana Premier League has been on suspension since March 15 due to the Coronavirus pandemic.last_img read more

Ekurhuleni Metro issues first bond

first_img“The issuance of this bond is an important move for Ekurhuleni towards broader and diversified funding sources for infrastructure projects and capital expenditure,” Absa Capital’s Prasanna Nana said in a statement this month. Ekurhuleni Metro’s credit rating of Aa2.za by Moody’s is among the highest of the five metropolitan municipalities rated by the agency, underpinned by its relatively large economic base, moderate debt levels and traditionally conservative financial management. Absa Capital, which also arranged the inaugural bond issuance on behalf of the City of Johannesburg (in 2004) and the City of Cape Town (in 2008), acted as the sole lead arranger for the bond. “The area’s strong infrastructural growth in recent years serves to support economic expansion, while revenue management and enhancement projects by the municipality aim to improve income by an estimated R5-billion by 2016,” said Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality chief financial officer Zakes Myeza. It is one of three metropolitan municipalities in Gauteng and houses a large industrial concentration accounting for 23% of the province’s gross geographical product, with manufacturing accounting for 28% of the area’s total production. 24 August 2010 SAinfo reporterWould you like to use this article in your publication or on your website? See: Using SAinfo material Industrial, manufacturing hubcenter_img The bond was priced at 185 basis points over the relevant government benchmark bond (R208), resulting in a fixed coupon of 10.56%. It was nearly two times oversubscribed, attracting total bids of over R1.5-billion. Infrastructure assets form 90% of Ekurhuleni’s asset base and include road, electricity, water and sanitation networks. The Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality, which comprises many towns in Gauteng’s East Rand, has become the third South African municipality to turn to the bond market to raise funds for its capital expenditure programmes, with the issuing of a 10-year fixed-rate R815-million bond. Ekurhuleni is the fourth-largest metropolitan municipality in South Africa with a population of almost 3-million people. It was established in 2000 with the amalgamation of nine East Rand towns and two councils. Infrastructure development An amount of R2.5-billion was spent on capital projects during the 2008/09 financial year and a further R1.8-billion during the 2009/10 financial year. A portion of the 2009/10 investment in infrastructure will be funded from this municipal bond.last_img read more

SAA continues flights to West Africa

first_img14 August 2014South African Airways will continue to operate in West Africa despite the Ebola outbreak, in line with World Health Organisation recommendations, while stepping up measures to protect its passengers, crew and ground staff, the airline said on Wednesday. The airline noted that the WHO’s emergency committee on the Ebola outbreak, after meeting in Geneva last week, concluded that there should be no general ban on international travel or trade to West Africa.“Having noted the announcement by WHO, SAA has stepped up measures aimed at protecting its passengers, crew and ground staff,” South African Airways spokesperson Tlali Tlali said on Wednesday.SAA flies to five destinations in West Africa, namely Abidjan (Ivory Coast), Accra (Ghana), Cotonou (Benin), Dakar (Senegal) and Lagos (Nigeria).“There is no travel ban to any of these destinations as a result of the outbreak of the virus in that region. The airline remains committed to ensuring the enforcement of international health protocols associated with air transport.”Tlali said that vigilant staff would be on the lookout for passengers showing symptoms associated with the Ebola virus – including sweating, nose bleeding and vomiting – adding that SAA staff are adequately trained to manage incidents of this nature, should the need arise.Should a passenger show symptoms at check-in, he or she will be isolated at once before undergoing interviews and tests conducted by the health authorities. “In the event that there is any doubt regarding the medical condition of any passenger, SAA may elect to deny such passenger/s to board its aircraft,” Tlali said.“In cases where passengers develop symptoms after the aircraft has commenced its flight, the crew on board will initiate specific procedures that include isolating such passengers from others on board.”The virus is not airborne and so no transmission can occur via air circulation in the cabin. Rather, it is transmitted through infected bodily fluids. Each of SAA’s aircraft has been equipped with special protective gear to enable the crew to respond appropriately, as well as a special biohazard waste disposal kit.SAA will remain in communication with local health authorities and monitor the situation on a continuous basis, enabling it to review its decisions in the light of any future developments.“SAA would like to urge everyone travelling to the West African region to take the necessary precaution and be vigilant,” Tlali said.Source: SAnews.gov.zalast_img read more

(APTN file)Kathleen MartensAPTN NewsA Saskatchewan man has accepted compensation after being racially profiled in a Canadian Tire store two years ago.The Regina outlet, which is independently owned, also committed to giving its employees diversity training.“The store formally acknowledges the hurt suffered by Mr. (Kamao) Cappo as a result of the incident and the force used against him,” said a joint public statement released by the Saskatchewan Human Rights Commission (SHRC).“Mr. Francois Brien, owner of the store, formally apologizes to Mr. Cappo for the incident.”Cappo initially posted cellphone video of the July 26, 2017 dust-up on his Facebook page where it racked up thousands of views. He said he and a friend were accused of stealing. After which he vowed never to shop in the store again.Broker the settlementThe SHRC said it helped broker the settlement after receiving a complaint from Cappo, an Indigenous man.Cappo said he was shopping for a chainsaw when the store manager confronted him and ordered him out of the store.“When Mr. Cappo asked why he had to leave, an incident occurred which escalated and resulted in the store manager using physical force against Mr. Cappo,” the release said Wednesday.Along with an undisclosed payout, the store recognizes it hurt all Indigenous people, the release added.“The store recognizes that members of Indigenous communities in Regina have suffered and continue to suffer from incidents of actual and perceived racism,” the release said.“As a result, the store has taken proactive steps to ensure that it can become an example for how to provide exceptional customer service to Indigenous customers.”SHRC praised the result and said it showed others the way forward.“Consensus outcomes like this are a prime example of how to correct problems of the past while improving relationships for the future,” it said.“This is reconciliation in action. This is how we begin to understand each other and to grow – as a people and as a province.”Cappo was devastated after justice officials declined to press criminal charges despite his video.
