Lakers’ Bender runs to state Class C cross country title

first_imgShare this:FacebookTwitterLinkedInRedditComment on this Story In a decade crammed full of state championships earned by athletes from Skaneateles, add boys cross country to that list, thanks to the talent and efforts of junior Caleb Bender. With a strong finishing kick, Bender earned the victory at Saturday morning’s New York State Public High School Athletic Association Class C race at SUNY-Plattsburgh.Like all the other runners at the state meet, Bender had to tackle a Plattsburgh course inundated by snow throughout the week and shortened to 2.8 miles from the usual 3.1 due to safety concerns. They also had to adjust to cold temperatures, with the thermometer in the teens and a wind chill in the single digits. And Bender was not the only local runner part of a state championship effort.West Genesee senior Matt Bartolotta, in his third state meet appearance, helped push Section III to the Class A team championship to complement the overall state title won again by Fayetteville-Manlius.Bartolotta, in the first race of the morning, finished in 15 minutes, 10.7 seconds, less than a minute behind the winning 14:32.7 posted by Warwick Valley’s Behailu Bekele-Arcuri.F-M had three of the top five individual finishers with Peyton Geehrer (14:35.5), Sam Otis (14:39.5) and Geoff Howles (14:50.5). Then Liverpool’s Carter Rodriguez finished seventh in 14:53.1 and Rome Free Academy’s Nick Ferretti was ninth in 14:54.5, with Ferretti’s teammate Nate Sletten, 16th in 15:04 flat and Baldwinsville’s Jack Michaels 36th in 15:18.5.Section III dominated the state meet as a whole, with team titles going to F-M’s boys and girls, Camden (Class C girls) and Beaver River (Class D boys), plus winning five of the eight sectional team competitions to go with individual wins by Bender, Elizabeth Lucason (Camden, girls Class C) and Tully’s Brooke Rauber, who took her fourth straight state Class D crown. Tags: cross countryskaneatelesWest Genesee Top-seeded going into the race, Bender took the early lead, only to get caught by LaSalle Institute’s Gitch Hayes in the latter stages. With 200 meters to go, the two were nearly step for step. But when it counted, Bender picked up his pace, tore down the final stretch and, in 14 minutes, 41.6 seconds, beat Hayes (14:46.2) by nearly five seconds.Christian Brothers Academy finished second in the team race behind Saranac Lake and that, along with top-five runs by Bender and Adirondack’s Tyler Fauvelle, helped Section III (309 points) finish just ahead of Section (VI) in the team event. They were joined by Hannibal’s Dillon Plantz (15th), South Lewis’ Collin Stafford (44th) and Cazenovia’s Jared Smith (56th).last_img read more

NBA Draft: The case for picking Michael Gbinije

first_img Related Stories NBA Draft: The case against picking Malachi RichardsonNBA Draft: The case for picking Malachi RichardsonHow Michael Gbinije and Malachi Richardson fared at the NBA Draft Combine on ThursdayMichael Gbinije signs with Roc Nation, talent agency run by rapper Jay ZMichael Gbinije’s career comes to screeching, unfitting halt in Final Four Target practiceGbinije played less than three minutes more per game in his senior year than his junior campaign, but took 188 more shots and 108 more 3-pointers in 2015-16.His percentages from both stayed nearly the same despite the increase of shots, and Gbinije also shot nearly 10 percent better from the foul line. The marked improvements from the field and the line can only help as he heads into the draft. Critics will knock his age, but the fact that his fifth year helped refine his shot into an NBA-caliber one will play to his advantage.Gbinije’s shooting stroke, along with his stature and potential draft spot, closely resemble that of San Antonio forward Kyle Anderson. The former UCLA point guard stands 6-foot-9 and was taken No. 30 overall in 2014, but his versatility and frame have allowed him to contribute in a couple roles for one of the league’s best teams. The 6-foot-7 Gbinije could possibly do the same if taken in the back end of the first round. Michael Gbinije was by far the most consistent player for Syracuse all season. He scored in double digits in all 37 games and according to head coach Jim Boeheim, made the biggest improvement over the course of his career of any player in the head coach’s 40-year tenure.Since the 24-year-old isn’t among the top prospects, and wasn’t even considered a fringe first-round selection during the NBA Draft Combine on May 11, he participated in the 5-on-5 scrimmages that first-rounders rarely play in. He shined during the two-day event, arguably helping his stock more than any participating player. His positional versatility, improved shooting percentages and five years experience in college are all check marks that validate a team taking him in the beginning of the second round and possible even the tail end of the first of Thursday’s NBA Draft. The case against taking Gbinije will be published on Saturday.AdvertisementThis is placeholder textDaily Orange File PhotoRole playAtop Boeheim’s 2-3 zone isn’t the only place lanky point guards can find a home. There’s certainly room for a long-armed ball-handler in the NBA as well, and Gbinije showed a proficiency in scoring off the dribble and off-ball in addition to running the point far more effectively as the season progressed. At the beginning of the year, Gbinije struggled to protect the ball against smaller guards that got under him on defense. If he stays at the position, he’ll face guards of similar heights and higher defensive prowess, so it’s to his advantage that Gbinije grew to stave off pesky opponents. He also played off ball during the combine, which he’d be equipped to doing in the NBA given his increasing role at the spot as Frank Howard established himself as a reliable point guard.MORE COVERAGE:The case for picking Malachi RichardsonThe case against picking Malachi RichardsonHow Richardson and Gbinije fared at the NBA Draft Combine Paid his duesIn the age of the one-and-done, a 24-year-old is hardly enticing when teenagers with sky-high potential litter the first round of the draft. But even if Gbinije is currently five years older than projected top pick Ben Simmons, there’s still value in a college graduate come draft night. This year, three seniors in Buddy Hield, Brice Johnson and Denzel Valentine could be taken in the lottery. In the case of Hield and Valentine, it’s evident that there’s still value in an established shooter who has improved significantly over his college career. If teams toward the back end of the first round and into the first few picks of the second value that, then Gbinije should be in good shape Thursday night. Region 5 RDC to clamp down on roadside vending

first_imgVendors operating at the Rosignol ‘train line market’ are being accused of offering food to the public which might not be wholesome. This is according to one coalition Councillor of the Region Five (Mahaica-Berbice) Regional Democratic Council (RDC).Dulston Hutson addressing the RDCAddressing the RDC last Thursday on the issue, Dulston Hutson said the operation of the illegal market created environmental health issues which the Region would have to deal with if appropriate action was not taken in time.He referred to the market as roadside vending, while noting that fish, meat and vegetables festered with thousands of flies.“Something needs to be done. There is a market in the area, why isn’t it occupied?” Hutson questioned. He was referring to the New Rosignol Market. The ‘Train Line Market’Vendors say that the market is in the wrong place. According to them, over the past 10 years, they were forced to take up occupancy at the Rosignol New Market. However, business was very slow and on each occasion, they were forced to go back to what was referred to as the ‘Train Line Market’.“The market that they want people to go to is not in a good location. The distance is too far from the people,” one vendor said.According to another vendor, it would be more profitable if the Neighbourhood Democratic Council (NDC) constructed stalls at the ‘train line’ location and collected revenue from the vendors. “This is the busy place. Where they build the market is near to the cane field. They made a mistake and they acknowledge it,” another vendor claimed.Less than three dozen vendors utilise the new facility on a daily basis. The fisheries section is never used. The Rosignol new marketHutson noted that the NDC was duty-bound to ensure that the citizens of that community are offered wholesome food.“We want to bring the efforts of that particular NDC that I am speaking of, whereby it has been reported by the health department that they are making efforts to remove the vendors and address other matters of environmental health that are not in keeping with good regulations, but the challenge remains one that they cannot get past because the NDC, which has the final responsibility in prosecuting those that are in violation of the policies, the NDC is not working together with the (Environmental Health Officers )EHOs.”According to Hutson, many of the EHOs who are attached to the NDC have been doing their jobs, but NDC Councillors are frustrating the process. Making specific mention of the Rosignol/Zee Lust NDC, Hutson said the EHO has documented his findings and has also suggested to the NDC that those vending are operating in an unhygienic environment. He believes that Councillors on the Rosignol/Zee Lust NDC might have a personal interest in allowing the residents of the community to be consuming food, which might not be wholesome.Meanwhile, the New Rosignol Market is a hive of activity on Saturdays and many of those who operate at the ‘train line market’ find themselves there.last_img read more

Wait 3-4 months to rethink troop level, general urges

first_imgCrocker and Petraeus will report to Congress next week on progress since Bush dispatched 30,000 extra troops to Iraq to curb sectarian warfare. Petraeus is expected to point to a dramatic decline in violence in Anbar province thanks to a grass-roots revolt against al-Qaida. On Tuesday, an al-Qaida front group announced on a Web site that it was forming suicide battalions to strike at Americans and their local allies. “These battalions, with God’s help, will perform their duties in an excellent manner during the month of Ramadan, and the enemies of God will suffer a lot,” the statement said. Ramadan will begin in about two weeks. Odierno said U.S. forces were alert to the possibility of increased attacks during Ramadan but in the run-up to the holy month “violence has been going down.” The optimistic tone appears aimed at persuading moderate Republicans in Congress to stand by the president. BAGHDAD – The No. 2 U.S. commander in Iraq said Tuesday that the next three to four months will be crucial in determining whether the United States can start to withdraw troops from Iraq without sacrificing security gains since the troop buildup began early this year. Lt. Gen. Raymond Odierno said the number of attacks in August fell to their lowest level in more than a year, although he gave no figures. Odierno insisted that overall violence was declining in a sign that the buildup ordered by President George W. Bush was working. “I think the next three to four months are critical,” Odierno told reporters. “I think that if we can continue to do what we are doing, we’ll get to such a level where we think we can do it with less troops.” Bush himself raised the possibility of a reduction in the 160,000-strong U.S. force during his surprise visit Monday to al-Asad Air Base in Anbar province, where Sunni Arab sheiks have been turning against al-Qaida in Iraq. Bush said U.S. Ambassador Ryan Crocker and the top commander Gen. David Petraeus “tell me if the kind of success we are now seeing continues, it will be possible to maintain the same level of security with fewer American forces.” U.S. officials acknowledge privately they have not turned the corner in restoring security. Last month, civilian deaths across Iraq rose to at least 1,809, the second highest monthly total this year, according to figures compiled by The Associated Press. At least 42 people were killed or found dead across the country Tuesday, according to police reports.160Want local news?Sign up for the Localist and stay informed Something went wrong. UN rewards Alex renewal project

first_imgARP has been awarded for infrastructuredevelopment in Alexandra. (Image: Friends of Alex)  A project that’s uplifting living conditions in Alexandra, one of South Africa’s most densely populated townships, has received a prestigious accolade from the United Nations.UN Habitat, a United Nations agency that promotes the social and environmental sustainability of towns and cities, awarded the sought-after Habitat Scroll of Honour to the Alexandra Renewal Project (ARP) on 5 October 2009, to coincide with World Habitat Day.The Scroll of Honour celebrates initiatives that have made outstanding contributions in fields such as shelter provision, highlighting the plight of the homeless, leadership in post-conflict reconstruction, and developing and improving the human settlements and quality of urban life. It is for the latter category that ARP has been recognised.Gauteng executive committee member for local government and housing, Kgaogelo Lekgoro, flew to Washington DC in the US to receive the award.“We are delighted that we have been selected to receive this award,” Lekgoro said. “We see this as a vote of confidence in the policies that we have pursued as government.“We are working tirelessly to provide housing, security and comfort for our people,” he added. The award was first introduced in 1989 and takes the form of a plaque engraved with the name of the winning programme, organisation or individual and their achievements.Improving livelihoodsARP has been recognised for helping thousands of poor people move into better homes and boosting health, water and electricity services.“It was our unanimous opinion that the Alexandra Renewal Project should receive the award this year for its outstanding efforts in … improving the living conditions for its residents,” said UN Habitat.ARP was launched in 2001 by then South African president Thabo Mbeki. It forms part of the government’s Integrated Sustainable Rural Development Programme and the Urban Renewal Programme that Mbeki announced during his State of the Nation Address in February of the same year.Between 2001 and 2004 ARP completed 28 sub-projects in Alexandra. These included the building of 1 400 houses, upgrading electricity supply and providing power for 12 000 houses, refurbishing all 18 schools in the township, the building of a new police station in Alexandra central and improvements made to the nearby Wynberg police station.ARP has also relocated 8 500 families from the township to more comfortable spots within the city of Johannesburg, while about 7 000 families have been removed from the banks of a polluted Jukskei River in the township to better settlements.Among its ongoing work, ARP is involved in upgrading ablution facilities and improving roads and pavements in the township. It is also refurbishing Alexandra’s hostels, which were mostly dilapidated. In total, ARP is overseeing almost 100 upgrade initiatives in the sprawling community.Alex, as the township is commonly known, was estimated to have 350 000 residents in 2001, all squeezed into an area of about 800ha. It is situated east of Johannesburg and close to Sandton, one of Johannesburg’s wealthiest suburbs.Among this year’s seven other award recipients, UN Habitat recognised the Ugandan Women’s Efforts to Save Children organisation, for providing water, health and sanitation to orphans and vulnerable children in that country.Township improvement driveGauteng is South Africa’s smallest, yet most populous province. It’s also the country’s economic hub. Local government there is currently running a number of programmes to improve its many townships, most of which are overcrowded and lack critical infrastructure.A US$403 000 (R3-billion) programme, the 20 Priority Township Project (20PTP), was launched in 2006 to develop identified townships within the province into upmarket residential areas. Its focus is on Orlando and Zola – two sections of South Africa’s largest township, Soweto – as well as Boipatong, Bophelong Sharpeville and Sebokeng in the Vaal Triangle.Atteridgeville, Soshanguve and Mamelodi were identified as special focus areas by the city of Tshwane in Pretoria, while Katlegong, Kwatsaduza, Wattville, Daveyton, Tembisa, Refilwe and Rethabiseng, east of Johannesburg in the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality, are also receiving special attention. To the west of Johannesburg, Mogale City‘s townships – Kagiso, Munsieville and Mohlakeng – are also benefiting from 20PTP. Conditions in Ratanda, a township in the Lesedi District Municipality, south Gauteng, are also being improved.Gauteng has also approved the Tembisa and Winterveldt Urban Regeneration projects “in order to improve historical townships existing in the province”. Tembisa is situated between Johannesburg and Pretoria, while Winterveldt is in Pretoria. As part of the 20PTP, most parts of Soweto have undergone major revamps in recent years, and thanks to the efforts of the city of Johannesburg, the dusty streets of that township and Alexandra have also been tarred.last_img read more

Five Things That Prevent You from Succeeding at Prospecting

first_imgSelling activities fall into two categories. The first is opportunity creation, the second, opportunity capture. The first necessarily precedes the second. If your sales results are not what you want them to be, look first to opportunity creation and prospecting. If you are not getting the results you want, here are a few things that might be missing. No Talk Tracks: I love scripts. I call them planned dialogues. You might call them talk tracks. In a complex, dynamic human interaction, there are countless variables. But it is possible to count the different responses you are likely to encounter when you interrupt someone and ask them for their time. The expectation that one talk track will work for all scenarios is just not true. You have to vary your approach and change things up. You do need talk tracks, and you do need chops. No Courage to Ask Again: When you interrupt someone to ask them for an appointment, many people will decline your request. They are trying to protect their time, and they are trying not to waste it on things that aren’t important to them now. This is reflexive, and you must ask again, increasing the value you are offering to trade for their time.No Campaigns: You call your dream client in January. You have a lot of targets, so you call them again in April. Then July, then October. This isn’t prospecting. It isn’t strategic enough, there isn’t enough activity, and it isn’t creating value for your target client. It’s sporadic, and it is not serious. If you don’t have more touches, and more interactions closer together, what you are doing can no longer be called prospecting. No Call Blocks: If there is not time blocked on your calendar, then you are not going to produce the prospecting results you need. For a salesperson, call block protects the time you need from the outside distractions that, while needing your attention, prevent you from building a pipeline. Prospecting time is sacred time, and you need to carve enough of it to generate the opportunities you need.Too Little Activity: You may not like that the fact that you can’t generate the opportunities you need with the amount of activity you prefer to spend prospecting, but that does not change the reality that if what you are doing isn’t working, you need to change something. You can have all of the four points above, but it you dial two numbers a day, none of it will amount to anything. Greater activity cures activity problems. Greater effectiveness cures effectiveness problems. Know which is preventing your success. Treat opportunity creation as if it is equally important as opportunity capture. Essential Reading! Get my 2nd book: The Lost Art of Closing “In The Lost Art of Closing, Anthony proves that the final commitment can actually be one of the easiest parts of the sales process—if you’ve set it up properly with other commitments that have to happen long before the close. The key is to lead customers through a series of necessary steps designed to prevent a purchase stall.” Buy Nowlast_img read more
