Bartica hosts inaugural cancer awareness walk

first_imgSince cancer awareness generally leads to early diagnosis, the Bartica Town Council organised a cancer awareness walk to sensitise the population about the life-threatening dangers of this disease and the importance of regular screening.Some participants lighting candles at the end of the exerciseSome 100 persons assembled at the Cenotaph on First Avenue to start the walk around the mining town which took place on Friday evening.Led by Mayor Gifford Marshall and Deputy Mayor Kamal Persaud, the march paraded through the busy business centre and into Second Avenue to the bandstand in Smart Park for a short programme.Participants were encouraged to take control of their health and ensure they get tested habitually, especially if there is reason for concern like hereditariness.Bartica has available options for early detection and treatment so persons do not have to travel all the way to the Capital City.During the programme, various speakers also underscored the need to offer support and love to those who endure the ravages of cancer.Two cancer survivors as well as a family who lost someone to cancer took to the podium to share their stories with the aim of urging the public not to be complacent when it comes to this disease.The programme closed with the lighting of candles and sharing of hugs by everyone after which the Deputy Mayor gave the Vote of Thanks, in which she not only commended the participants of the respective agencies and departments but also commended those of the business community who contributed to the success of the walk.The event was well received and participants expressed the desire to have similar activities in the future.The Walk was titled “Power of Pink Walk” and was executed under the theme “Pink is the New Green” in an effort to raise awareness.last_img
