Salaam Cricket 2019: MS Dhoni and Sourav Ganguly standout Indian captains, says Michael Clarke

first_imgWorld Cup 2015-winning Australia captain Michael Clarke and former England captain Nasser Hussain today heaped praise on India’s own 2011 WC winning skipper MS Dhoni. While Hussain described Dhoni as ‘the coolest character in the world’, for Clarke Dhoni is right up there with Sourav Ganguly on the list of greatest Indian captains. When India Today Sports Consulting Editor Boria Majumdar asked the duo what the World Cup 2019 win might mean for Team India, Hussain harked back to the final of the WC held 8 years ago, that India won.”MS Dhoni is the coolest character in the world. If you think about the final of the 2011 World Cup it was just a cool, calm guy delivering at the right moment and cooly hitting a six to win the final,” Nasser Hussain said.Michael Clarke added: “I think the Indian captains that stand out for me are Sourav Ganguly and MS Dhoni. Virat continues to grow as a captain. As a batsman, there is no one close to him in ODIs.”Meanwhile, both the former cricketers didn’t hold back their admiration for Virat Kohli, who will lead India’s challenge for a third World Cup title from Wednesday. India play their opener of World Cup 2019 against South Africa in Southampton on June 5.”Virat Kohli is not worried about anything else other than winning games for the country. That is his greatest asset as a captain. I thought there never will be someone to replace Sachin Tendulkar, but Kohli is going to break them all, a phenomenal achievement and player,” Nasser Hussain said.advertisement”I watched Sachin Tendulkar and Brian Lara rule ODI cricket but at the moment Virat in ODIs is better than anyone else to stand up to the 1 billion pressure and going on to score day after day is something that stands out. Sunny [Sunil Gavaskar] also deserves a lot of credit for making them believe,” Clarke added.Nasser Hussain also said he loves Virat Kohli’s on-field aggression and credited Ganguly’s role in transforming Team India into a team with “winning” mentality.”I love it to be honest. Indian cricket changed because of Ganguly. Sourav was never bothered about being friends with people. Ganguly transformed them from a nice cricketing nation to a ruthless one that was only interested in winning.”Nasser Hussain added that he sees a bit of MS Dhoni in Eoin Morgan, hosts England’s captain at 2019 World Cup.”One of the things that are against them [England at 2019 World Cup] is pressure and not talent. The England fans seem to be getting ahead of themselves but Morgan is the coolest and calmest person and the right man to lead the side. A bit of MS Dhoni in him. It’s about delivering under pressure for the side which will win the tournament.”ALSO READ | Salaam Cricket 2019: When Shoaib Akhtar asked Harbhajan for World Cup 2011 final ticketsALSO READ | R Ashwin was relieved when he was told he would not play World Cup semis vs PakistanAlso See:last_img
