No new deal for Roy Hodgson ahead of Euro 2016, insist FA

first_imgEngland may have enjoyed a faultless European Championship qualifying campaign but that will not prompt the Football Association into offering Roy Hodgson a new deal.Hodgson, out of contract after next summer’s tournament, has expressed fears that delaying a decision on his future could generate speculation and uncertainty in the build-up to the Euros. But FA chief executive Martin Glenn insists there will be no talks over a new deal until the finals end as they look to avoid a repeat of the “unsavoury position” that emerged with Fabio Capello.Capello was given an extended deal just weeks before the 2010 World Cup began – a tournament which then became a major disappointment for England and the FA found themselves saddled with the Italian.Glenn, speaking at the Soccerex conference in Manchester, said: “Roy is very comfortable with the situation. What we wanted to avoid was the slightly unsavoury position we had with Fabio Capello at the end of the World Cup where it clearly didn’t work.”Glenn also revealed that the FA will make renewed efforts to secure a Great Britain women’s football team for the 2020 Olympics despite opposition from the other home nations. He said: “It’s a huge loss [missing out on 2016 Olympics]. I understand the politics, which is national associations wanting to protect their position as a British team might put that at risk.“There’s an elite group of three or four countries who see the Olympics along with the World Cup as the most important tournament. I think it’s a real shame.“I wish we had had more time to persuade the Welsh, Northern Irish and Scots this would be a better thing but we are going to try really hard and there is going to be a lot of political pressure to make sure it happens in 2020.”Glenn also suggested England is perceived as arrogant within the global game and said the fact the organisation is called ”the FA” – as the first governing body in football – is ”the ultimate expression of arrogance.”Asked if the FA could be rebranded the ”English FA” Glenn said: ”Possibly. But it is not an ultimate priority.””What’s seen to be the case, we get interested in the international game when it suits our purposes … to host a World Cup. It’s a global game. We have to build global alliances. We have to be seen to be a force for good.”I think we are perceived as arrogant. I don’t think we necessarily are but perceptions matter.” Roy Hodgson 1last_img read more

Forum to address Filipino addiction

first_img“Despite the facts attesting to early exposure and use of alcohol by generations of Filipinos, there seems to be, likewise, a phenomenon of non-recognition of alcoholism as a medical condition,” according to the report, which will be presented at Tuesday’s forum. In focus group discussions, participants described the cultural inclusion of alcohol into religious, business and social functions. “Try talking alcohol addiction (in the Philippines) and good luck if anyone understands the concept,” one participant said. Drinking and other substance abuse have carried over to the United States, particularly among young women, the survey concluded. The liberation women have experienced in this country has afforded them access to alcohol – in many cases for the first time, researchers found. Based on the findings, new outreach programs will be designed to incorporate the entire family – an important factor in treating addiction, particularly for new immigrants, Almeda said. Other ideas for future educational and treatment programs will be discussed by Tuesday’s panel. In addition to Almeda, participants include two rehabilitation specialists, two high school students who will share their experience in the Filipino culture and the director of the county’s Department of Health Services’ Alcohol and Drug Prevention program. melissa.evans@dailybreeze.com 160Want local news?Sign up for the Localist and stay informed Something went wrong. The Asian American Drug Abuse Program contracts with Los Angeles County Department of Health Services in providing treatment programs. They serve the entire community, but focus on Asian-American substance abuse. Very little research has been conducted on alcohol and drug addiction specifically within the Filipino community, Almeda said. Counselors and others who work in treatment have, however, seen an anecdotal rise in people seeking treatment and problems arising from substance abuse. In a 2007 survey of the Carson and Long Beach Filipino communities, nearly three-quarters of respondents said they started drinking before the age of 21. The majority said their primary access to alcohol was at home, with the family, the survey showed. SOUTH BAY: The Asian American Drug Abuse program will discuss findings from local surveys and offer recommendations. By Melissa Evans STAFF WRITER A steep rise in drug and alcohol abuse in the Filipino community has prompted a local agency to step up outreach and treatment programs in areas where many live, including Carson and other parts of the South Bay. last_img read more

Keep costly cars in use a long time

first_imgBuying a car with a good track record is of course important, and the magazine, which does not accept advertising and is published by the not-for-profit Consumers Union, names several Honda, Lexus and Toyota models as good bets. But the magazine article and a Consumers Union news release also emphasize our make-them-last strategy. Among the advice: Follow the maintenance schedule in the owner’s manual (skipping even one oil change can damage the engine and accelerate wear). Use only parts and fluids meeting manufacturer specifications (we do, while also shopping around for the repair and maintenance shop with the best combination of price and service). Check the car yourself from time to time, looking for fraying or cracks in belts, and cracks or bulges in hoses. And wash the car regularly, not just for looks but also to help preserve the paint and keep the sheet metal below it from rusting. The Volkswagen Beetle, alas, was going strong after more than 130,000 miles before copious rains that flooded our street knee-deep ruined it beyond repair. Our cars routinely break 100,000 miles, except a Toyota Corolla we donated to charity in 2003 when we realized that, working part time from home, we did not need two cars. Along with homeownership costs, buying or leasing more car than you can afford or need can derail your finances. “Our family has withstood some potentially damaging events because we had lower expenses and higher savings than we would have had if we had bought the bigger house and the new cars throughout the years,” wrote Nancy Howard of Dodgeville, Wis. After paying off a car loan, the Howards kept their car a few years while regularly saving an amount equal to the car payments. They were able to make a bigger down payment on the next car and eventually buy one for cash. The magazine Consumer Reports, meanwhile, found that, with proper care, many cars today can last 200,000 miles or more with few if any major repairs. An annual survey by the magazine found 6,769 readers with 200,000 miles or more on their vehicles, including 488,000 for a 1994 Ford Ranger pickup. (See the October issue or go to the Web site www.ConsumerReports.org). When comparing the costs of buying and keeping a car for 225,000 miles over 15 years to buying and financing an identical model every five years, Consumer Reports found savings could be more than the original purchase price, and even greater if the savings are invested. My first car, a nine-year-old peeling-blue Ford I bought before my junior year in college, lasted me the two years I needed it to hold a part-time job until graduation. Not bad considering I paid just $50 for the clunker, all I could afford. I also had to carry jugs of water in the car. Every five miles or so, I had to stop, open the hood and pour water into the radiator so the engine wouldn’t overheat. After graduation, I sold the car for $35. I warned the buyer about the car’s condition but he let it overheat and die in the middle of downtown Miami three days later. Caring well for our cars, my wife, Georgina, and I have had only five other automobiles combined in the 40 years since, from a red Volkswagen Beetle I bought new for $1,400 after I started working full time to our current silver Mercedes C-Class four-door sedan we bought in 2001. last_img read more

Abdul’s young ‘Idols’ make her so proud

first_imgIn the back seat of the car were sons Sean Preston and Jayden James. In the front seat: a court-appointed monitor! Points do go to Britney for having them strapped into their car seats. TMZ.com posted a video of the whole thing. Britney approached a light on Coldwater Canyon, on her cell phone. She drove into the intersection, then made a quick turn to Muholland Drive and avoided oncoming traffic when someone yelled: “Red light, red light!” I’m sure the judge in her custody battle with ex-hubby Kevin Federline will not be amused and perhaps will forbid her to drive with her kids in the car. Britney: Hire. A. Driver. Now. More Britney: Friend Lance Bass offers view And speaking of Britney, her old pal Lance Bass has been talking about her during his publicity blitz for his new book, “Out of Sync.” In an interview with “HX” magazine, the singer was asked if he ever thinks about her antics and says to himself, “Oh, Britney.” Lance laughed and said: “Yeah. I think that’s just the typical thing to say every day when you wake up and read AOL news page. You have to admit it’s entertaining. I always hope she’s just doing it as a joke and we’re all going to be punk’d in a couple of years – like, `You know all that stuff I did, it was all a joke!’ I think she’s been doing this documentary (reality show) for years, where she’s like, `Today I’m going to shave my head and see if they buy it!”‘ For more celebrity news, go to Greg Hernandez’s Hollywood Joe blog at blogs.dailynews.com/hollywoodjoe160Want local news?Sign up for the Localist and stay informed Something went wrong. She’s one of the most talented singers, and everyone knew that last season. All I want for her is to just go out there and live her dream. As long as she’s out there singing, for her she’s doing God’s work.” And as far as the other winners and finalists from seasons past, Paula feels like a mentor whose young charges have made her so proud. “It’s fantastic to see Elliott Yamin do fantastic, to see Daughtry, to see Kellie Pickler, everyone’s doing their thing, Taylor Hicks is touring. It’s all part of the process and I love the fact that our show single-handedly really does change these kids’ lives and launches solid careers for them.” Britney’s red-light maneuver on camera Speaking of young singers, today’s episode of As Britney’s World Turns in a doozy. The damsel of a mess really can’t do a thing that isn’t recorded by the paparazzi. That was the case Thursday night when cameras caught Britney Spears driving through a red light. After she helped announce the nominations for the People’s Choice Awards on Thursday night, I had a little chat with Paula Abdul about the upcoming season of “American Idol,” which has launched the careers of such superstars as Carrie Underwood, Kelly Clarkson and Chris Daughtry. When the new season of the monster hit debuts in January, Paula thinks yet another star will emerge. “I think we can expect the best season so far; I honestly feel that. I’m not just saying that – I didn’t say that last season,” Paula insisted. “But I do believe that we have an amazing season coming up, very interesting contestants coming up, great back stories, really great singers, and adorable! Really, really cute.” She had watched the Country Music Awards the night before and was quite excited to see former “Idol” champ Underwood win big again and is looking forward to having Melinda Doolittle release a CD. last_img

first_imgLeicester striker Jamie Vardy has accepted a Football Association charge of improper conduct, his club have announced. It means the England forward could be hit with a further ban to damage the Barclays Premier League leaders’ title bid.He was sent off after receiving a second yellow card for diving in Sunday’s 2-2 draw with West Ham and the charge relates to his reaction to the decision.Vardy responded furiously, pointing and shouting in the face of referee Jonathan Moss before leaving the pitch following his tangle with Angelo Ogbonna. He is suspended for Sunday’s visit of Swansea with the Foxes five points clear at the top of the table with four games left. And Leicester face the possibility of losing the 29-year-old for longer if his behaviour is deemed worthy of further punishment.Vardy has requested a personal hearing. The FA also charged Leicester for failing to control their players following the award of the Hammers’ 83rd-minute penalty. The club have accepted that charge too, and said in a statement: “Leicester City Football Club has today (Thursday) accepted a Football Association charge of failing to control its players during the Barclays Premier League fixture against West Ham United on 17 April.“Furthermore, Jamie Vardy has accepted a charge of improper conduct arising from the same fixture. Transfer updates for Man United fans: Pogba news, shock Arsenal enquiry and more

first_img Paul Pogba return? – Here are the latest Man United transfer rumours – New manager Jose Mourinho is looking to bring Pogba back to Old Trafford for a British record transfer fee of £60m, according to the Sun. The offer tabled to Juventus is worth an initial £48m with an extra £12m in add-on payments, to eclipse the £59.7m paid for Angel Di Maria in 2014. Pogba left the club for Juve in 2012 when his contract at United expired. 5 5 Jose Mourinho has now officially been Manchester United manager for a week and already he is starting to make decisions about who he wants in and out of his squad.Veteran midfielder Michael Carrick has been retained for another season after it looked like his time at Old Trafford was over, while Juan Mata and Daley Blind are surplus to requirements under the Portuguese. And as the Euros takes centre stage, more and more names are being linked with moves to – and from – Manchester United.Mourinho is apparently happy to allow three or four players to leave and replace them with some big name signings as he looks to build a squad capable of winning the Premier League.Click the arrow above, right, to see the latest rumours about who could be on their way in and out of the club this summer. 5 Harry Kane blow – Tottenham are willing to shatter their wage structure by offering Kane a £100,000-a-week contract in order to keep him from the clutches of Mourinho and United. Squawka claim Spurs are desperate to fend off interest in the Englishman from United after the Red Devils targeted him last summer. 5 Memphis Depay facing the chop – Memphis is the player most vulnerable to the axe, report the Daily Mail, after his underwhelming first season in the Premier League. Mourinho is looking to cut three or four players and the Dutchman is thought to already have his head on the block. 5 Another French teenage sensation – United are looking to add another French teenager to their ranks this summer by signing Bordeaux’s 19-year-old midfielder Adam Ounas, say the Mirror. The under-20 international scored six goals in 28 appearances last season and the Red Devils have enquired about his availability having scouted him for months. Shock Laurent Koscielny enquiry – Reports from Le 10 Sport in France have claimed Manchester United have been rebuffed in their shock attempt to bring Arsenal defender Koscielny to Old Trafford. Mourinho is keen to bring in a replacement for Daley Blind – who is allowed to leave – but both the Gunners and Koscielny are uninterested in the transfer.last_img read more
