And I hope he can do a very outstanding match.”I don’t know if they will give a warm welcome to Aleksandar, but I hope Aleksandar will make a very good match.” About the authorFreddie TaylorShare the loveHave your saylast_img read more

9 months agoLee Clark Exclusive: Chasing Man City can’t slip-up; don’t forget Spurs

first_imgLee Clark Exclusive: Chasing Man City can’t slip-up; don’t forget Spursby Lee Clark9 months agoSend to a friendShare the loveThe festive period is a great time for a football fan, and for close to 30 years, I was fortunate enough to be around professional football clubs during those hectic two-and-a-half weeks. It’s very similar for a player and a coach. There’s certainly no festivities because you need to be in peak condition, ready to face the amount of games that you have. You lose track of the days really, because the games just come thick and fast, you’re playing every 48 to 72 hours over a two-and-a-half-week period.I think if you ask players, they prefer the playing side to the training sessions and the opportunities to get games. But the hardest part as a player are the little knocks and niggles where as if you had a full working week you could maybe get over them. And then from a manager’s point of view, you’ve got a conundrum. What if you’re team plays well and the individuals play well and they get a result? Do you stick with that team? They’re playing with confidence and they’ve got a good result. But in the back of your mind, you’re thinking, have they got the energy levels to reproduce the level of performance again? And if you do stick with the winning team and they lose because they’re lacking freshness, then you regret that you didn’t freshen the group up. So its a tough one really. Also, with the size of squads in the Premier League and squads that have players that can replicate each other with good performances, it’s a real tough period and balancing act for managers especially. There were a number of great games over the festive period, it’s a great time to go and watch football. All I would temper with that is, are we getting value for money because teams are resting players? To argue against that, I would look at the last game of the festive period when the two sets of players for Manchester City and Liverpool still had enough energy left to produce a fantastic game.It was a really interesting two weeks of football, but obviously the stand-out was City vs Liverpool. It was a game of the highest quality. And when I say highest quality, I mean world-class players for both teams at every position in every aspect of the game, it wasn’t just the quality of the passing and the possession, it was the high-tempo pressing of both teams, and the individual talent was also incredible. It was class in every aspect of the game. And I think for some people who maybe don’t understand the game would have been expecting a lot of chances from both sides. But when you have so many good players, including the defenders and goalkeepers, you’re going to be dealing with some quality footballers and that was what was achieved on the day. I agree with what Pep said after the game. City have to treat every game like a cup final. I don’t think they are in a position to drop any more points. But if there’s any team in the league that could go from now until the end of the season and not lose, it’s Manchester City. The win over Liverpool will give them a huge lift. Jurgen Klopp went and made big changes against Wolves which resulted in another loss, but I think when they get that starting XI back they’ll be fine. It’s different for them now because they’re the leaders and are getting chased by people. It does bring extra pressure onto the players when they are getting chased, knowing that every game they play that doesn’t end with maximum points and they’ll be looking over their shoulder to see if that gap between them and the others is getting closer. I’m excited to watch it, it’s going to be a cracking race with them going toe to toe. And let’s not forget what Tottenham are about because they’re hanging in there. They’ve got a terrific young squad as well. I’m certainly looking forward to second-half of the season! TagsOpinionAbout the authorLee ClarkShare the loveHave your saylast_img read more

‘Calm, shy Messi is the best in the world’

first_imgDavid Abraham shared a football pitch with Lionel Messi before the Barcelona star became a household name and has no doubt that his fellow Argentine is the best player on the planet. The Eintracht Frankfurt captain and Messi played together for Argentina’s Under-20 team, with the Rosario native already in the Barca side and Abraham lining out for Independiente in the nation’s Primera Division. That Albiceleste side took the top prize in the 2005 Youth World Cup, a tournament which saw Messi finish as top scorer with six goals alongside future senior squad stars like Pablo Zabaleta, Sergio Aguero and Ezequiel Garay. Article continues below Editors’ Picks ‘There is no creativity’ – Can Solskjaer get Man Utd scoring freely again? ‘Everyone legged it on to the pitch!’ – How Foden went from Man City superfan to future superstar Emery out of jail – for now – as brilliant Pepe papers over Arsenal’s cracks What is Manchester United’s ownership situation and how would Kevin Glazer’s sale of shares affect the club? And Abraham has nothing but fond memories of Messi, both as a player and a person.”He was a very calm, a very shy guy,” the defender explained to Goal and DAZN. “He never wanted to be the centre of attention outside the pitch, always speaking very quietly.”A few years later we met again in a Champions League match between Barcelona and Basel. After the final whistle, we had a very nice and friendly conversation.”He is really a normal person. He used to like playing PlayStation, like most people.”Abraham also had no doubt in labelling Leo the best of his generation, although he hesitated somewhat when asked if he had surpassed another Argentina legend.”At the moment, he’s definitely the world’s best. Whether he is the best of all time, I don’t know. What (Diego Armando) Maradona did for Argentina at the time was really great,” he added. “Messi could now win three World Cups with Argentina, but they will not have the same meaning as the Maradona triumph. You cannot compare that with each other.”At that time, Argentina was recovering from a lost war against England and Maradona scored twice in the quarter-finals against England and later led Argentina to the World Cup victory. This triumph created an incredible joy throughout the country.”Therefore, one you can’t make comparisons. That’s impossible.”last_img read more

Spoils shared as Man Utd draw with Burnley

first_imgManchester United scored two late goals in the space of five minutes as they came from 2-0 down to draw 2-2 with Burnley at Old Trafford on Tuesday.Ashley Barnes and Chris Wood appeared to have set Burnley on course for a first away win against United since September 1962 and inflict a first defeat on caretaker manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer. However, Paul Pogba’s 87th-minute penalty and an injury-time strike from Victor Lindelof – his first for the club – salvaged a point for the home side that could yet prove important in the race for the top four. Marcus Rashford scuffed a glorious early chance wide and Barnes could have punished that miss were it not for a vital interception by the returning Phil Jones.Pogba had the ball in the net but was pulled up by a correct offside call, as United endured a frustrating end to a half in which they struggled to reach top gear and failed to have a shot on target. And Old Trafford was stunned six minutes after the restart, when Barnes fired high into the net from just inside the box after Andreas Pereira was robbed of possession by Jack Cork.PIC:  pic.twitter.com/JO8ZQNt5ZJ— Burnley FC (@BurnleyOfficial) January 29, 2019United at last upped the tempo and Tom Heaton denied Rashford from distance before producing a stunning stop to claw the ball away from the right-hand post after Romelu Lukaku’s touch.A poor touch from Rashford spoiled another good chance for United, and it was duly punished once again, with Wood rising high to nod home Ashley Westwood’s cross.United surged forward and Pogba swept a spot-kick into the top-left corner to give them some hope, after Jeff Hendrick had tugged down Jesse Lingard. And in the second minute of injury time, Lindelof turned in the rebound after Heaton kept out Alexis Sanchez’s header to rescue a share of the spoils.FULL-TIME Man Utd 2-2 BurnleyTwo goals down with time running out, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side stage a dramatic fightback to salvage a point#MUNBUR pic.twitter.com/excMEhBUxP— Premier League (@premierleague) January 29, 2019 What does it mean? No record for Solskjaer as top-four hopes suffer blowSolskjaer failed to become the first manager to win his first seven Premier League matches in charge of a club, although this was very nearly a more damaging result than it proved to be.Despite Lindelof’s dramatic leveller, Arsenal’s win over Cardiff City sees United slip two points behind the Gunners, and they will be five adrift of the top-four places if Chelsea beat Bournemouth on Wednesday.Burnley are now four points clear of the bottom three, although conceding such a late equaliser after so much good defensive work will have undoubtedly hurt.A Barnes-torming showing from Burnley’s number 10Barnes did so much good work pressing United’s centre-backs to limit their build-up play, he deserved his goal. And he took it in spectacular style.Has Pereira blown his chance? This was Pereira’s first league start since August and it did not go to plan. The midfielder was ineffective in the first half and gifted Cork the ball to allow Barnes to break the deadlock before being withdrawn.
