Football News Barcelona beat Real Sociedad, come closer to eighth La Liga title in 11 years

first_img For all the Latest Sports News News, Football News News, Download News Nation Android and iOS Mobile Apps. Barcelona: Barcelona is closing in on their eighth La Liga title in 11 years after Clement Lenglet and Jordi Alba both scored in a 2-1 win over Real Sociedad on Saturday. The victory means Barca only have to beat Alaves on Tuesday and then Levante next Saturday to be crowned champions at Camp Nou, while three points against Alaves will be enough on its own if Atletico Madrid then loses to Valencia on Wednesday. Whether in three days or seven, it is now surely only a matter of when rather than if Ernesto Valverde’s side successfully defends their trophy, despite Atletico keeping the gap to nine points after they edged past Eibar earlier on Saturday.     “We have to get it out of our heads that we are nine points clear,” Valverde said. “We now have three days until we play again and it will be difficult.”RELATED     Wrapping it up early though would allow Barcelona the luxury of focusing completely on the Champions League, which could give them an advantage over their semi-final opponents Liverpool, who seem to be embroiled in a Premier League race to the finish with Manchester City.     But this was no stroll, with Real Sociedad pulling level in the second half thanks to Juanmi’s equaliser, even if parity lasted less than two minutes.     Lionel Messi might not have scored but it was his cute pass that teed up the excellent Alba to score the winner after Lenglet had earlier powered in a header from Ousmane Dembele’s cross.     Barcelona racing towards the title     Barcelona stumbled out of the blocks this season but they are now tearing down the home straight.     This was their 21st league game without defeat while Real Madrid sits 16 points behind them ahead of their game at home to Athletic Bilbao on Sunday.     “You always look at the matches of Real Madrid because you always consider them a rival,” Valverde said. “In their case, they may be thinking about next season.”      It was a surprise when Messi failed to score with two free-kicks in the first half while Sociedad could have been in front but Juanmi was denied by Marc-Andre ter Stegen and Willian Jose spurned the rebound.     There was nothing complicated about Lenglet’s opener, the Frenchman rising high above two defenders and heading into the corner for his first league goal in a Barcelona shirt.     Ter Stegen and Alba were fortunate not to be punished for a mix-up and then La Real did score, in the 62nd minute, as Juanmi slid to connect with Mikel Merino’s brilliant through ball. But in the 64th minute, Barca was ahead again as Messi weaved one way and then the other before finding Alba to his left. The defender jinked inside and drove a shot into the far corner.     Earlier, Atletico Madrid had needed Thomas Lemar to come off the bench and find an 85th-minute winner against Eibar as they stretched their lead over Real Madrid to seven points.     Without Antoine Griezmann and Diego Costa, who were both suspended, Diego Simeone’s side looked set for a stalemate that would have given Real at least a sniff of second place. Instead Lemar, on as a substitute, tucked in Koke’s cross to deliver another timely boost to Atleti’s morale, in the same week their star goalkeeper Jan Oblak extended his contract with the club until 2023. Lemar’s goal will have done the Frenchman’s confidence no harm either, after a difficult debut season following his 60 million-euro move from Monaco last summer. Simeone will expect more next term. Barcelona need to win two of their games to seal the La Liga title. If Atletico Madrid lose to Valencia, then Barcelona need only one win. This will be Barcelona’s eighth La Liga title in 11 years.center_img highlightslast_img read more

New Delhi: The ICC Cricket World Cup 2019 is less than four weeks away and the contests between England and Pakistan are important for both teams in their preparation. However, the first ODI at the Kennington Oval in London was marred by rain and a wet outfield as the match ended in a no-result. The start of the match was itself delayed due to a persistent drizzle and the game was reduced to 47 overs per side. England won the toss and chose to bowl and Jofra Archer showed his mettle. In a fiery opening spell, Archer troubled both Imam-ul-Haq and Fakhar Zaman with pace, bounce and swing. After building the pressure, Archer accounted for Zaman for 3 as the batsman edged to Joe Root at slip. His first spell read 4-2-6-1.Babar Azam and Imam tried to steady the ship and both looked to play out the tough conditions but Liam Plunkett got rid of the in-form Azam for 10 as Pakistan struggled. Imam and Haris Sohail batted confidently but another sharp rain break for 30 minutes reduced the match to 41 overs per side. After resumption, Jos Buttler missed Sohail’s stumping off Adil Rashid but the heavens opened up yet again.last_img read more

Manohar resigns as ICC chairman citing personal reasons

first_imgSHASHANK Manohar stepped down as the chairman of the International Cricket Council (ICC) with immediate effect on March 15. The former Board of Cricket Control in India (BBCI) president cited personal reasons behind his decision to resign from the top job.The 59-year-old was elected unopposed as ICC’s first independent chairman in May 2016 and had signed to serve a two-year term. However, Manohar decided to end his time with cricket’s governing body and offered his resignation to chief executive David Richardson. In his resignation letter, he thanked all the directors, the management and staff for supporting him during his tenure as ICC chairman.“I have tried to do my best and have tried to be fair and impartial in deciding matters in the functioning of the Board and in matters related to Member Boards along with the able support of all directors,” Manohar wrote, according to ESPN Cricinfo.“However, for personal reasons it is not possible for me to hold the august office of ICC Chairman and hence I am tendering my resignation as Chairman with immediate effect. I take this opportunity to thank all the Directors, the Management and Staff of ICC for supporting me wholeheartedly. I wish ICC all the very best and hope it achieves greater heights in future,” he added.Manohar’s role as the ICC chief saw him being responsible to reduce the influence the Big Three – the BCCI, Cricket Australia (CA) and England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) – had on the governing body. He served as BCCI president from 2008 to 2011 and was re-elected in October 2015, following the passing of former president Jagmohan Dalmiya.last_img read more

Impressive England beat Kiwis to secure semi-final spot

first_img(REUTERS) – Hosts England became the first team to qualify for the Champions Trophy semi-finals after hammering New Zealand by 87 runs in Cardiff to stay top of Group A yesterday.Eoin Morgan’s side mastered tricky conditions to reinforce their credentials as tournament favourites with an excellent team performance in which everyone contributed.Joe Root top-scored with an impressive 64 – his 32nd score above fifty in 85 ODIs – as England posted an all-out score of 310 after being put in to bat.In reply, New Zealand struggled to overcome the first over loss of Luke Ronchi for a golden duck and, although Kane Williamson struck an assured 87, his teammates were picked off by England’s impressive attack.Liam Plunkett was the pick of the bowlers, taking four wickets as New Zealand subsided to 223 all out in the 45th over.New Zealand can still reach the semi-finals if they beat Bangladesh in their final game and Australia lose to England. The day began on a sombre note when play was stopped after six overs at 11:00hrs local time (1000 GMT) for a minute’s silence to remember the victims of Saturday’s militant attack in London. When play resumed England continued their early progress, although their total would have been higher had their top order not given their wickets away.IMMACULATE ROOTOpener Jason Roy, looking horribly out of form, was bowled by a straight ball from Adam Milne for 13 and Alex Hales swept across the line after a quick-fire 56 as Milne took another wicket. When Morgan also departed after a poor shot on 13, England were in danger of stalling. But Root, who had made a century in England’s opening win over Bangladesh, played immaculately, sharing a fourth-wicket stand of 54 with Ben Stokes before bottom-edging Corey Anderson on to his stumps.Stokes (48) and Jos Buttler (61 not out) kept the scoreboard ticking over before England were dismissed in the 50th over for 310, probably 30 runs short of expectations. The weather always threatened to make a decisive intervention and a shower in between innings, which delayed New Zealand’s reply, made the pitch unpredictable as it dried out.A stiff wind further complicated matters for batsmen and bowlers alike with ground staff having to reset the perimeter rope and the bails frequently blowing off. After the dangerous Martin Guptill departed, edging Stokes to Root for 27, New Zealand’s hopes rested firmly on Williamson, who had scored a century in their abandoned opener against Australia. The No.3 accumulated a solid fifty from 66 balls without ever dominating and was undone by a snorter from Mark Wood which bounced off his gloves to the keeper. With Ross Taylor departing soon after for 39, and the run rate climbing further, New Zealand’s reply subsided as England closed in on a comfortable victory.last_img read more

Sri Lanka seal series win as Shafiq century proves in vain

first_imgSRI Lanka consigned Pakistan to their first series defeat in the United Arab Emirates, prevailing by 68 runs as Asad Shafiq’s century proved in vain in the second Test in Dubai. After conceding a first-innings deficit of 220, Pakistan looked certain to fall to a heavy loss but they dragged themselves back into contention by bowling out the tourists for 96 before Shafiq and Sarfraz Ahmed (68) put on a record sixth-wicket partnership on day four. That same duo came to the crease yesterday with 119 still needed, but Sri Lanka remained patient, Dilruwan Perera’s 5-98 helping to secure the series 2-0 after a similarly engrossing 21-run success in the opener in Abu Dhabi. After Sarfraz fell early, Shafiq – whose previous highest score this year was 39 – represented the Pakistan’s last vestige of reaching their victory target of 317.But when he fell for 112 to an excellent Kusal Mendis slip catch, Pakistan were nine down with 73 still needed and it was left to Rangana Herath to finish off the home side for 248 and wrap up a ground-breaking series win – a first for a touring team since Pakistan moved from playing Tests on home soil.It was tough on Shafiq to finish on the losing side, the batsman hitting his first ball of the day for four to bring up the 150 partnership and see his team past the 200 mark.A paddle to fine leg for a single brought up his 11th Test hundred, before he was dropped from his next delivery by Dimuth Karunaratne at slip off the bowling of Dilruwan, whose disappointment was soon alleviated as Sarfraz top-edged a sweep and was well held at fine leg by Nuwan Pradeep.Dilruwan trapped Mohammad Amir lbw for four, the batsman unsuccessful with his review, but Pakistan had more joy with the use of DRS in the following over, as Shafiq managed to overturn Nigel Llong’s decision after debutant Lahiru Gamage nipped one back into his pads.Yasir Shah (5) was next to go, Herath luring him out of his crease allowing Niroshan Dickwella time to juggle before effecting the stumping. Two balls later, Shafiq edged Suranga Lakmal to Mendis and the last word went to Herath as Wahab Riaz (1) skied one to captain Dinesh Chandimal, who led the raucous Sri Lanka celebrations. Caribbean officials to make pitch to AIBA for a Boxing Academy in Guyana

first_img– Ninvalle to attend AIBA Executive Committee in Dubai November 3 – 5FOLLOWING their meeting held in Georgetown last weekend, Caribbean Boxing officials will make a formal pitch to the sport’s world Governing Body, the International Boxing Association (AIBA), for a Caribbean Boxing Academy to be built in Guyana.President of the Guyana Boxing Association (GBA), Steve Ninvalle  will be formally making the proposal to AIBA at the body’s November 3 – 5 Executive Meeting in Dubai. Ninvalle is an Executive Committee Member, and was recently named on AIBA’s Executive Committee Bureau.Speaking with Chronicle Sport yesterday, Ninvalle explained that the idea to have Guyana as the regional home for the sport, is because of the country’s availability of land.“Preferably in the hinterland region, because the idea is for the fighters to be isolated so that they attention could be on boxing and boxing only” Ninvalle said when asked about where the proposed facility could be located.According to Ninvalle, the regional officials agreed to have the facility built in Guyana and that the idea actually came from the officials representing mainly Trinidad and Tobago and Barbados. The American Boxing Confederation (AMBC) through their president, Osvaldo Rafael Bisbal, according to Ninvalle, called the proposal “a much-needed” item for Caribbean boxing, and that Guyana is the best suited location for the facility.Bisbal was in Guyana for last Saturday’s meeting, where the presidents from several countries gathered to discuss pertinent issues that are affecting the sport in the region and to collectively agree to certain principles with regards to the turmoil in AIBA.Bisbal, Ninvalle said, told the presidents that the Academy is something the AMBC will fully support.last_img read more
